CH 406. Chemical Display Projects

Purpose:  The purpose of this course is to provide students with a structured framework for preparing permanent chemical displays. The completed displays will be presented in museum style cabinets to be located in Gilbert Hall and Gilbert Addition.

Requirements: The course requirements will consist of a signed agreement, designed by the student and a faculty advisor, indicating the proposed portion of the display a student intends to prepare, and an outline of the steps necessary to complete the project.  The project must incorporate library research, substantial scientific content, and the scientific significance of the display should be apparent.

The student must also submit to the chemistry office an "APPROVAL FORM FOR BLANKET NUMBER COURSES IN CHEMISTRY" that is signed by the faculty advisor in order to enroll: http://www.chem.orst.edu/Advising/blanketcourseapproval.htm

Grading and Credits: The student will agree to work on display preparation on a regular weekly schedule and will submit an interim progress report during the middle of the term. The finished display will be evaluated by the designated faculty advisor, who will determine the student’s grade for the course.

CH 406 may be taken for a letter grade (A-F) or on a S/U basis and is a variable credit course (1-2 cr).  A grade of satisfactory (S) is equivalent to a letter grade of C- or better (AR18.a.3).

Credit Restrictions for CH 406:

maximum per term 2 cr
total allowed 6 cr
total counting for CSE a 3 cr

a CSE designates career supportive electives which are a component of the advanced chemistry and advanced biochemistry options for the B.S. degree and of the B.A. degree.

CH 406 must be taken on a letter-grade basis (not S/U) to count as a CSE.  CH 406 does not count as a laboratory course.

The student is expected to work on the project an average of 3 hours a week per credit throughout the term.

Enrollment in this course may be limited based on the availability of display materials, resources, and the faculty advisors.  The student must find a chemistry faculty member that is willing to serve as the adviser for the course.

CH 406 cannot be used to fulfill the requirements of the chemistry minor.
