Special Notes

There are several changes to required courses for some of the chemistry options that are offered in other departments.  See the updated checklists posted on the chemistry advising web page for the most current changes and substitutions.

CH 361/361H- the WF section is open.  If you can take the course on WF you should register for this section. Chem majors that have PH 211 lecture and thus can not take the WF section, should go to the course web page and submit the request for department override (see link at top of page - fill out form and submit online). If you have problems with form, please contact Dr. Pastorek by email.

CH 461/461H will be overfilled Fall term and all students must place their name on the chemistry department request list (fill out form and submit request for department override).  If you have problems with form, please contact Dr. Pastorek by email.

CH 464/464H is the Fall term WIC.  IT IS OPEN!  Students needing one WIC chemistry course next year to graduate by June 2011 are strongly encouraged to enroll in CH 464 fall term because CH 462 winter and CH 463 spring are likely to be over-enrolled - don't wait if you can fit CH 464 in your schedule now. It meets MW from 1-4:50.

Advanced Biochemistry option and Biochemistry option:  BB 494 is scheduled to be taught winter term 2011 and BB 493 spring term 2011.  BB 495 lab is no longer offered.  If you are Advanced Biochemistry option, we are substituting BB 496 (1 cr) and BB 497 (1 cr) for additional lab experience.  Please go to the BB main office in ALS 2011 to request an override for the BB labs.

This mainly affects Forensic Science option and Environmental Chemistry option:
Bi 314 is now a prerequisite for MB 302/303.  Bi 314 requires three terms of BI 211-213 general principles of biology, so you will need to plan ahead if you want to take MB 302/303.

For Chemistry Education option:  SED 412 and SED 413 are both scheduled to be taught only during winter term 2011.  SED 409 is replaced by TCE 409.

There are several updates to the Business option.  Please see the check list and additional information link at the chemistry advising page.  Chemistry majors can now earn a minor in Business and Entrepreneurship.

CH 324 lab
will be offered this summer (2010), Fall, Winter and Spring next year.

The Global Issues course and the Science Technology and Society Course required to satisfy the Synthesis area of Bacc Core must be from two different departments.  You could be denied graduation if you miss this point.

All Chem majors have mailboxes in GILB 156 (room across the hall from the main chemistry office).  Some of you have not picked up your mail.  You are encouraged to subscribe to the chemistry major's listserv: go to the OSU listserv page at: http://lists.oregonstate.edu/mailman/listinfo/chmajors and make a request.

2. PIN numbers

All undergraduates in science have been assigned a new Personal Identification Number (PIN) for next year.  You are required to meet with your chemistry adviser to get your new PIN in order to register. The chemistry office can provide your adviser's name, schedule, and office hours.   All B.S. majors must declare an option before receiving a new PIN (Signup for option) Your adviser will expect you to bring your plan for next year with you to your advising meeting before giving you a PIN number (you might consider filling out the checklist for your option from the Departmental advising web page).  Note that summer term is still on the previous PIN (2010) .

3. Graduating Seniors

Audits are being processed now for seniors graduating Spring term 2010.  About the second week of May you should verify with your advisor or Luanne in the main chemistry office that everything is in order.  Students planning to graduate Summer 10,  F10 or W11 should submit an Application for Bachelor's degree with the registrar to begin the audit process (one audit per term) see: http://catalog.oregonstate.edu/ChapterDetail.aspx?key=6#Section54

Note:  Carefully indicate on the form: (1)  your degree (B.S. or B.A.); (2) your major (chemistry); (3) your option(s) if your degree is a B.S.

More information on graduation on the chemistry web page: (http://www.chemistry.oregonstate.edu/undergrad/advising/auditsandgraduation.htm).

Commencement is Saturday, June 12th. http://oregonstate.edu/events/commencement/
The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am in Reser Stadium and will end at approximately 1:20 pm.  Line up for the processional begins in the MU quad at 9 AM. (note this is a change from past years!)

Reception: The Chemistry department will host a complimentary light lunch for chemistry graduates & guests from 1:30-3:00 pm on Saturday June 12th after the official graduation ceremony in the lobby of Gilbert Addition.  Please email Dr. Pastorek with the number of guests that you intend to bring.

PHOTO  Please arrange to get your picture taken for the graduate picture board that is displayed in the hallway of Gilbert Hall.  Complements of the Chemistry department, please make an appointment to get your photo taken at The Ball Studio located at 6th and Adams in Corvallis (541-753-5721; theballstudio@gmail.com).

Exit Poll.  We encourage all graduating seniors to fill out and submit the exit poll (see link here) This information is used for planning purposes and also to support applications for teaching grants.  And we would like to know how we are doing!

4. Options

All B.S. students must declare an option independent of the graduation audit because correct advising (e.g., the courses you take) depends on the chosen option.   See the main chemistry office and they will help you do this.

5. Declared Electives

For some options, the student must have elective courses approved.  For the advanced chemistry and advanced biochemistry options of the BS degree or the B.A. degree, majors are required to have their career-supportive electives approved by their adviser Fall quarter of the junior year.  For the business option you must specify which business courses will be used for upper division electives.  For the chemical education option, make sure you have met with your chemistry adviser and selected what courses you intend to use to satisfy the 15 cr in a secondary endorsement area as defined by one of the endorsement areas listed on the SED web page:   http://smed.science.oregonstate.edu/node/28

6. Research and Internships

To register for undergraduate research (CH 401) & internships (CH 410), students must fill the blanket number form available at the following link or in the chemistry office. See directions for registering for these courses at the bottom of the form web page.

7. Required Courses for the Chemistry Options:

Check the updated Check List and Additional Info link for your option at
http://www.chemistry.oregonstate.edu/undergrad/curricula.html for explanations, additions, and changes for requirements. For example:

PreMed Option: because PHL 444 is sometimes not scheduled, students should review the list of substitute courses

If you are working on the Chemistry Education option, SED 310 and SED 416 are no longer offered.  We are substituting PSY 202 for SED 309.  If you have already taken SED 309, this will count in place of SED 409 (these are both practicum courses).  The replacement for SED 416 is to select one course from a list that will satisfy the chemistry requirement.  The list is posted on the web at the additional information link: http://www.chemistry.oregonstate.edu/undergrad/advising/additionalinfochemeduc.html
